Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has called on his fellow Parliamentarians to remain steadfast in the reform movement.
Speaking after the hearings of the trial held on Sunday of the identity theft charges, MP Faris called on his fellow Parliamentarians who had attended the hearings. He appealed to them not to waver in their determination and mandate, adding that he was resolute.
Former President and father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had attended Sunday’s hearings, as well as sister Yumna Maumoon and brother in law Mohamed Nadheem.
This is the first time in the nation’s history that former President Maumoon attended a hearing at Criminal Court.
In addition to members of the former First Family, Mahchangolhi North MP Mariya Didi, Kimbidhoo MP Abdullah Riyaz and Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim Waheed attended the hearings.
Identity theft charges were raised against MP Faris was raised for having used the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). MP Faris has denied the charges.
He was arrested after a search of his premises last week. The premises were searched after allegations of attempted bribery charges were made on the MP. He had denied these charges as well.
