The bodies of the victims of the recent powerful gas explosion in Makunudhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll, have been sent to India.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Wednesday revealed that the bodies of the two victims were transported to India to be handed over to their families, on Tuesday.

Two individuals were killed in the explosion that rocked Makunudhoo on October 21.

The explosion that took place near the island’s fish market, located in the southern end of the harbor was reported to authorities at around sundown on October 21.

Officers of the police institution were dispatched to the scene of the explosion shortly after.

MPS revealed that the two individuals who died in the explosion were employed by the contractor for the land reclamation project to build an airport in Makunudhoo.

A forensic team and an investigation team arrived in the island to investigate the case soon after. The two teams were deployed to Makunudhoo from neighboring Kulhudhuffushi City, to investigate the explosion.

According to eyewitnesses, bodies of the victims were seriously harmed in the incident and flesh were discovered scattered across a vast area in the distance.

Officers of the police institution were dispatched to the scene of the explosion shortly after.

This came at a time an explosion in Kulhudhuffushi Airport critically injured a 37-year-old man, on October 19.

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has since urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the gas cylinder explosion as well as the explosion in Kulhudhuffushi Airport.

The president-elect has urged authorities to look into the matter thoroughly and ensure the safety of the work being conducted in Makunudhoo.

Shedding light on these two incidents, the office of the President-elect released a statement stressing that it was very unfortunate and that both incidents should be looked into, thoroughly.

Muizzu went on to urge the relevant authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not re-occur.

He went on to urge lawmakers to expedite the bill submitted to the People’s Majlis, which seeks to address such incidents, systemically.
