Three judges are adjudicating over the matter

25 parliamentarians face losing their seats if the Attorney General’s case with the Supreme Court asking judges to disqualify MPs who switch party allegiances – which was filed in reference to Articles 30, 74, and 75 of the constitution – passed in the state’s favour.

  1. MP Abdulla Mohamed, Dhidhoo Constituency: He was elected as a nonpartisan member and had joined the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). Since then, MP Abdulla has resigned from PPM as well.
  2. MP Mohamed Abdulla, Ihavandhoo Constituency: MP Mohamed, popularly known as ‘Muhammaa’ – a name dating back to his career as a comedic film star – was elected as a member of the opposition Jumhooree Party. He had then defected to PPM before resigning from that party as well.
  3. MP Abdulla Sinan, South-Mahchangoalhi Constituency: Sinan had recently resigned from PPM, and is now a nonpartisan member.
  4. MP Ahmed Mahloof, South-Galolhu Constituency: One of the first parliamentarians to have resigned from the ruling PPM. MP Mahloof, who had recently finished serving a jail sentence on obstruction charges, is currently a nonpartisan member.
  5. MP Moosa Manik, Hulhu-Henveiru Constituency: The deputy parliament speaker had abandoned his longstanding allegiance with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, and now sits as nonpartisan member.
  6. MP Mohamed Ameeth, Madduvari Constituency: MP Ameeth had been dismissed from PPM after he refused to support a party three-line whip.
  7. MP Mohamed Ali, Holhudhoo Constituency: He was elected on an opposition MDP ticket, but has defected to the ruling party.
  8. MP Yameen Rasheed, Velidhoo Constituency: One of the youngest parliamentarians in political history, Rasheed was elected as a member of MDP. However, he has defected to PPM and is now an avid critic of the opposition.
  9. MP Hassan Mufeed, Milandhoo Constituency: The former Jumhooree Party parliamentarian is now a member of the ruling PPM.
  10. MP Mohamed Hussein, Kanditheemu Constituency: This government-aligned parliamentarian was elected on an opposition Jumhooree Party ticket.
  11. MP Hussein Areef, Nolhivaram Constituency: Areef was elected on a Jumhooree Party ticket but now sits as a member of PPM.
  12. MP Hussein Shahudhee, Hanimaadhoo Constituency: Shahudhee was elected on Jumhooree Party ticket and had defected to PPM. Since then, he has left the ruling party as well and now sits as a nonpartisan member.
  13. MP Abdulla Khaleel, Nilandhoo Constituency: Khaleel was elected as nonpartisan member. He is now a member of PPM and serves as the party’s secretary-general as well.
  14. MP Ahmed Mubeen, Biledhoo Constituency: Elected as a member of the Jumhooree Party but now sits as a member of PPM.
  15. MP Faris Maumoon, Dhiggaru Constituency: Faris became a parliamentarian after the original representative of the constituency was jailed for a 25-year term. He has been removed from PPM.
  16. MP Ilham Ahmed, Dhangethi Constituency: The Jumhooree Party parliamentarian had left it for PPM. He resigned from the party recently and is now nonpartisan member.
  17. MP Ahmed Thoriq, Mahibadhoo Constituency: Elected as a nonpartisan member, he had joined PPM shortly before resigning.
  18. MP Mohamed Waheed, Thulusdhoo Constituency: Waheed was elected as a member of PPM but has since been dismissed from the party. He is now nonpartisan parliamentarian.
  19. MP Ahmed Shiyam, Naifaru Constituency: He was elected on a nonpartisan ticket, and is now a member of PPM. Reports claim that he is close associate of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.
  20. MP Abdulla Ahmed, Thinadhoo Constituency: Abdulla was elected on a Jumhooree Party ticket before leaving to PPM. He has resigned from the party as well.
  21. MP Saudhulla Haleem, North-Thinadhoo Constituency: He has resigned from the ruling party.
  22. MP Saud Hussein, Villingili Constituency: Saud has been a member of PPM, before resigning from the party.
  23. MP Mohamed Musthafa, Thimarafushi Constituency: He was elected as a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, he has since resigned from the party.
  24. MP Muaz Mohamed, Madavelli Constituency: He was elected on a nonpartisan ticket. However he jointed PPM shortly after his election.
  25. MP Mohamed Shah, North Fuvahmulah Constituency: Elected on a PPM ticket, he has resigned from the party and now sits as a nonpartisan MP.
