Maldives has withdrawn its candidacy at the United Nations’ Human Rights Council for 2018-2020.
While Maldives abandoned its bid for a third-term, the government’s mission in Geneva said it would put forth its candidacy again for the term that follows 2020.
The election is to be held in September, and Maldives had been competing for one of four seats along with Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Fiji, and Qatar.
The government’s bid to acquire a regional seat at the Security Council is still ongoing. Maldives is competing against Indonesia for this election, which is to be held next year.
