Ministry of Tourism has launched an International Underwater Photography Competition in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Maldives Tourism.

The underwater photography competition was launched in collaboration with Ocean Geographic and Maldives Alliance for Dive Operators.

According to the Ministry this competition will be held over various years. As such, during this year, 50 best diving spots of Maldives will be selected and dives will be held at the 50 spots at the same time on the same day.

The event is scheduled to take place from 07:30 am to 05:30 pm on September 29.

Speaking about the competition, Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom highlighted that 50 dive spots will be selected from all over the Maldives. Stating that discussions are ongoing with the island councilors, Minister Mausoom said that each council is given the chance to nominate two dive points. The same opportunity is given to resorts as well. However, the resorts will be able to nominate three diving spots.

Moreover, dive centers and individual divers of Maldives can also nominate diving spots and take part in this event. They will however have to pay an entrée fee of MVR 85.

The Ministry will be choosing one diving spot from all of the spots nominated by the councils and resorts, says Minister Mausoom.

Minister Mausoom highlighted that this event will be a great opportunity to showcase the diving spots of Maldives and advertise the underwater beauty of our country to the world.

Director and Publisher of Ocean Geographic Michael AW, stated that this is a great opportunity to conduct researches about the Maldivian reefs by comparing the photographs of different reefs taken at the same time.

Both Maldivian and International underwater photographers can join the dive and photography competition, says the Ministry of Tourism. As such, while Maldivian photographers can participate in the competition for free, International participants will have to pay an entrée fee of USD 10.

150 photographs from the event will be showcased during the underwater photography exhibition, to be held on next year January.
