The earthquake in Indonesia poses no threat to Maldives, says the Maldives Meteorological Service.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the northwest of Indonesia’s Maluku Islands on Thursday night. The quake was measured at 62 km deep.
While Indonesia’s seismological agency has issued the tsunami warning for nearby coastlines, MET Office said that the earthquake will not affect the Maldives whatsoever.
A senior official at the office told RaajjeMV that it is headed away from the Maldives region, towards the pacific.
While the MET Office sees no threat to the country, it continues to monitor the situation.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said hazardous waves were possible within 186 miles (300km) of the epicentre. It reported no tsunami risk for more distant areas.
