President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's campaign team has also announced that he had won the MDP presidential primary election, according to exit polls.
The team revealed that Solih remains in the lead with 67 percent of the votes.
Former President and current Speaker of the People's Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed has won the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary election, according to his campaign team.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the team said Nasheed had the lead with 64.7 percent of the votes.
The statement was issued before vote counting commenced.
Voting in the presidential primary election of the main party of the ruling coalition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has closed.
Voting took place from 9am to 5pm.
According to the party, a total of 243 ballot boxes were placed across the country for the primary election.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that two individuals in Rathafandhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll and one from Thinadhoo island in the same atoll, have been taken into police custody in connection with a case of damaging ballot boxes.

It has been reported that water has spilled onto the ballot papers. However, since there are still enough ballot papers, polling has resumed.
