Covid-19 claims 63rd victim in Maldives
The victim has been identified as a 67-year-old man
The man died at around 6am, Wednesday
10 Covid-19 fatalities were reported during February

Maldives has reported another victim from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) identified the victim as a 67-year-old man.

The man is to have succumbed to complications of the virus after having been rushed to the emergency room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in an unresponsive state at around 5:30am on Wednesday.

He was declared dead by doctors half an hour later.

This has been declared the 63rd death from Covid-19 in the Maldives.

This is the second death to have been reported this week, a 62-year-old man also died from Covid-19 complications on February 28, while receiving treatment on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital.

A day earlier, an 80-year-old Maldivian woman being treated at Hulhumalé Medical Facility succumbed to the virus as well.

This comes at a time Covid-19 fatalities have doubled in count since January 2021. As such, while four deaths were observed in January, the number increased to 10 during February. 16 percent of all deaths attributed to the Covid-19 infection in Maldives occurred within the month of February.

With a spike in case count, hospitalizations have also increased in comparison to what was observed during the second Covid-19 wave in 2020.

HPA stressed that fewer people visit the flu clinic now despite having Covid-19 symptoms, which in turns show a lesser flu positivity rate despite daily infections spiking. The Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) has since revealed that stricter measures will be enforced to subdue the ongoing third Covid-19 peak and curb virus transmission across the epicenter, Malé City.
