Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has wrapped up the land reclamation component of the land reclamation and short protection project in Maafushi island of Kaafu atoll.

As of June 14, 25 hectares of land were claimed under the project, said MTCC.

The company was tasked with the project by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on August 27, 2019 and the reclamation concept of the project is a detached separate island connected to the main island via a causeway.

MTCC revealed that the design proposed for the reclamation component was based on introducing more beach areas during reclamation and to resolve the high demand of residential plots in the island.

The company revealed that the first rock boulder barge required for the shore protection work is scheduled to arrive on June 25.

The project, initiated under a key electoral pledge made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the people of Maafushi island, is worth MVR 99.98 million, said MTCC,
