Maldives has repatriated an additional 200 undocumented Bangladeshi workers stranded due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The migrant workers were repatriated on a chartered flight of the country’s national airline, Maldivian.
Maldivian revealed that the undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated with the help from the ministries of foreign affairs, economic development as well as other relevant institutions.
While over 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals have been repatriated from the Maldives thus far, the government has been in talks with the government of Bangladesh to repatriate undocumented workers living illegally in the Maldives, via Maldivian, flights from the country’s airlines as well as navy ships.
Hundreds of migrant workers have been testing positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives, after the first community transmission was detected on April 15. Authorities have also begun an operation to move these individuals, at a high risk of contracting the virus due to their living conditions and lifestyles, to better living quarters.
