Authorities are to probe the death of an unborn baby, in Narudhoo island of Shaviyani atoll.
Dr. Nazla Rafeeq revealed this at Monday night’s Covid-19 press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), where she also revealed some details of the case.
Citing the manager at the Shaviyani atoll hospital in Funadhoo island where the patient is to have requested permission to travel to, the doctor said that this was not approved as this hospital was being developed into a Covid-19 treatment facility.
While she is to have been referred to the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital in Haa Dhaal atoll and arrangements were made for her to travel there on Sunday, Nazla said that the patient had not traveled there but rather to Milandhoo island in Shaviyani atoll. They are to have learnt that the baby had died, after arriving at the health center there.
An official from the Narudhoo health center told RaajjeMV that the arrangements to travel to Kulhudhuffushi were made despite the Covid-19 lockdown on Narudhoo, but that the family had requested to travel there on Tuesday when inquired on a time for departure. The official added that she was taken to Milandhoo as she wanted to consult with a gynecologist at the island’s health center.
While the gynecologist had informed them of complications with the pregnancy, the official said that further arrangements were made for her to travel to Kulhudhuffushi immediately. She is to have traveled to the Haa Dhaalu regional hospital on Monday afternoon, where the baby was confirmed dead.
Speaking at Monday night’s press conference, Dr. Nazla stressed that their main aim is to provide all required healthcare across the country despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Noting that health centers across the country have been told that they cannot refuse services to anyone especially in such emergency cases, the doctor said that they are able to seek advice from NEOC when required.
Further, she said that the health ministry ‘quality improvement division’ will investigate the case
