Kimbidhoo Constituency MP Abdullah Riyaz says that the security granted to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom cannot be slashed.
In a tweet, the MP, who also served as Commissioner of Police, said that law compeled the Government to give security to former Presidents, adding that differing views to the government were not grounds to slash security.
President Maumoon had left the country to India on a personal trip on Wednesday. His security was not allowed to accompany him on the trip.
RaajjeMV understands that President Maumoon and his bodyguards were made aware of the travel ban at Velana International Airport (VIA) VIP lounge. Security personnel at the airport had confiscated travel documents of the bodyguards at the lounge. Their luggage was checked in and returned back. Previously, the security fleet granted to President Yameen had been slashed, citing a rule change.
Speaking to press, prior to his departure, the former president said he was not afraid of any measure taken by the government, even if he is arrested. He said that it was very likely that he will be arrested based on the current situation. However, Maumoon said that he had received no reports that he will be arrested.
