Have the opportunity to rectify issues with Parliament: MP Faris
Current Parliament had failed in public accountability

Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has stated that the 'current Parliament had failed in public accountability', adding that there was still opportunity to rectify those issues.

Speaking in a press conference held by PPM faction loyal to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, MP Faris said that the no confidence motion on Speaker Abdullah Maseeh was 'an opportunity for MPs to liberate themselves from the Government pressures'.

“This is a historic opportunity [for MPs] to remember their constituents, to become more considerate of the public. We have the chance to ensure that the Parliament is more mindful of their responsibilities and mandate in the next two years,” Faris said.

MP Faris admitted that the Parliament had failed to pass legislature on basic rights and wellness, adding that Parliament procedures were against democratic principles. He added that this was shared with Party members before, but no solution had been found.

Faris said that both the Parliament and MPs had failed to hold the Government accountable, further aggravated by MPs barred from speaking in the Parliament. He added that certain bills were rushed through the Committee and debate stages.

The no confidence motion on the Speaker of the Parliament, submitted on Wednesday was spearheaded by MP Faris. MP Faris a strong critic of the Government, is nephew to President Abdullah Yameen and brother to Ministers Dunya and Ghassaan.
