RaajjeTV’s senior journalists Ahmed Fairooz and Azmoon Ahmed Didi were summoned to Maldives Police Service (MPS) in connection to a case under investigation.
Both Azmoon and Fairooz had given their statements on Tuesday. Lawyer Abdullah Haseen had accompanied the two journalists.
Both the journalists and lawyer had declined to release information on the case, as it was being investigated by MPS’s Sensitive and Confidential Investigation Unit. MPS had requested the journalists not to disclose information as well.
While Azmoon and Fairooz were summoned to MPS on Tuesday, journalist Mohamed Wisam is to be sentenced on Thursday on charges of obstruction of duties. The station’s cameraman Adam Zareer had already been sentenced on the same charges. He was fined by MVR 3,000 on February 27th.
Additionally, Wisam and journalist Leevaan Ali Nasir were fined by MVR 28,800 on a different charge of obstruction on January 24th. The station’s Chief Operating Officer Hussain Fiyaz Moosa has been charged with touching an officer without consent. The summary charges are to be read in the next hearing, which is to be scheduled.
