Hearings of the embezzlement case of state funds on MMPRC ex-MD Abdullah Ziyath and Hussain Shahid, cousin of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, had been canceled as their summons had the incorrect date.

The charges were raised on the two for the embezzlement of US$1 million (MVR 15 million) received to MMPRC in 2014. The funds were transferred to Shahid’s account.

The charges were raised to the two on January 10, with the first hearings held on January 26th.

Ziyath’s lawyer had said they will respond to the charges when they had the opportunity to review the documentation. Shahid had denied the charges and requested for a 15-day period to appoint a lawyer.

Sunday’s hearings were cancelled as the summons sent by Criminal Court to Correctional Services had the wrong date on it. Due to this, Ziyath could not be summoned to the hearings and as such, they were canceled.

Ziyath is currently serving an eight-year jail term over the embezzlement of funds received from the lease of Lhaviyani Maabinhuraa.

Shahid is currently under Police custody.

Criminal Court had not revealed when the next hearings will be held.
