Former President and PPM President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called for an investigation into the claims made by Male’ City Council Member Zaidhul Ameen on Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Nawaz.
A statement released by the Maumoon’s Office stated that Zaidhul Ameen had made strong accusations on the Assistant Commissioner and as such Nawaz must be excluded from the questioning.
The statement also called on to transfer Zaidhul Ameen to house arrest in order to guarantee his safety. It also said that Zaidh cannot be questioned without his legal representation. Additionally, the statement also called on Maldives Police Service (MPS), National Integrity Commission (NIC) and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) to properly investigate the claims.
The statement released by Zaidhul Ameen said that many individuals were attempting to falsely accuse Party President of major crimes. As such, he said he was being questioned over a hard disk reported missing from PPM’s offices at H. Themaa.
Zaidhul Ameen’s statement also added that Assistant Commissioner of Police Nawaz had consistently requested him to issue a statement claiming that Maumoon was conspiring against the Government and the hard disk was with President Maumoon. He said that if his statement did not reflect this, then he risked facing a long jail term.
