Health Center may have been negligent in minor's death in Kalaidhoo
14-year-old Ahmed Vishal died in January, due to injuries he sustained in an accident.
The Kalaidhoo Health Center had reportedly taken issue with amount of blood on Vishal.

Ahmed Vishal, a minor who succumbed to injuries he sustained in an accident in Kalaidhoo of Laamu atoll, was sent home to be ‘cleaned’ when first brought to the island’s health center.

The 14-year-old Kalaidhoo resident was out riding a motorcycle with two of his friends when the accident happened on the island’s main road on January 28th.

When he was rushed to the island's health center, the staff had taken issue with the amount of blood on his person, and sent Vishal home to be cleaned first. A member of the Kalaidhoo council confirmed this to RaajjeMV, saying that the health center had refused to immediately treat Vishal.

Vishal was brought to capital city Malé to be treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where doctors said injuries to his head had resulted in complete irreversible loss of brain function and could only breath through a ventilator.

The boy died two days later on January 31.

Though Yusuf Riyaz, the health center’s manager, had repudiated this, an official from the Ministry of Health said its currently investigating the case. Riyaz maintained that Vishal had been without any delay.

The Ministry stated that if it would take action against any individual found to have been negligent in the matter.
