Ibra challenges ruling PPM over number of voters
25,801 members voted in MDP Chairperson elections

Former President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ibrahim Ismail has challenged the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), claiming that PPM will not be able to bring out voters for Presidential primaries, in the same manner and numbers as MDP for their Chairperson polls.

The latest poll figures from MDP Chairperson elections show that a total of 25,801 members had voted in the Chairperson polls. Out of this, 25,545 voters had given the green light to lawyer Hassan Latheef for the spot.

In reference to this, the former President claimed that PPM will struggle to bring out voters for their primaries, adding that they will not be able to bring out voters even close to the 25,801 voters that had voted in the Chairperson polls.

The Chairperson position has remained vacant, after Ali Waheed resigned from the position. Both President Mohamed Nasheed and Ali Waheed had congratulated Hassan Latheef on his whim.

In the congratulatory tweet, Nasheed said that he had high hopes that Hassan Latheef will usher in stronger leadership and will bring in justice to Maldivians. Ali Waheed said he wished a brighter future for MDP under Hassan Latheef’s tenure.

Hassan Latheef is the 5th Chairperson of the Party.
