Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has said that construction of a Special Protection Unit is underway at Himmafushi Asseyri Jail, but that they are unable to give a date on when the project will be completed.

Speaking on the matter, MCS media official said that there is a lot of work to be done, adding that they are currently constructing the ceiling and walls.

However, he said they cannot give “an exact date on when it will be finished.”

Citing construction work at Himmafushi Asseyri Jail, a number of high-profile detainees were transferred to house arrest in 2016; including leader of Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Imran and former Defense Ministers, Mohamed Nazim and Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaan.

The construction work of the Special Protection Unit is being conducted by prisoners serving their jail sentences in Himmafushi Asseyri Jail, and are given an allowance for their work.

While MCS now claims that they cannot give a date on when the construction work will be completed, it had, back in April 2016, said that the work will be done in a months’ time.
