‘Graft allegations against Mayor Sodiq, cowardly’, says Nasheed
Former President Nasheed condemns graft allegations
Mayor Abdul Sodiq is running for the upcoming local elections
Allegations claim unscrupulousness in handling preparation for the 17th SAARC Summit

The corruption allegations against Addu City Mayor Abdul Sodiq are an attempt to sabotage his candidacy in the upcoming local council elections, former President Mohamed Nasheed said.

Nasheed on Tuesday sent out a tweet condemning the allegations, and described the ‘attempt to disqualify his candidacy’ as cowardly.

The graft allegations against Sodiq and Deputy Mayor Hassan Shahid claim that they had acted underhandedly while presiding over preparation projects for the 17th SAARC Summit, held in Addu City’s Equatorial Convention Center.

Sodiq and Shahid had both denied the charges at the first hearing for the case held at the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court, which gave them 14 days to appoint lawyers, mount a defense and ruled to carry the case forward.
