Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he had no issues with Maldivian United Opposition (MUO) leader Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, adding that both of them were working very closely.
He made the statement speaking to RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee program while in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Jameel had been missing from the last two visits Nasheed had carried out to the country. When questioned, Nasheed had denied that there were issues between the two. Nasheed said they enjoyed a close relationship, with both of them holding regular meetings.
“There are no issues. I had met Dr. Jameel before I came here. When in UK, we meet twice a week atleast. Jameel and I have very close partnership. I respect Jameel a lot. I believe that Jameel is one of politicians in the country who are quite successful. So in future, we will collaborate with Dr. Jameel,” he said.
President Nasheed said MUO was vital to MDP and helps the Party to establish common grounds between MDP and other parties. He added that he hoped Jumoohree Party and President Maumoon will join the MUO to spearhead the political movement.
“The main purpose of MUO is to provide a platform for MDP to partner with other political parties. We normally find it difficult to work with other parties. I still believe that it is a part of democracy to be able to work with Parties with different philosophies. With MUO we get that opportunity. We have the room to negotiate and work with Adhaalath Party. Similarly we get to work with supporters of Colonel Nazim and Dr. Jameel. I hope that Jumhooree Party and President Maumoon will join our efforts,” he said.
Nasheed added that relations with Adhaalath had not been soured in spite of the Party’s decision not to participate in the Local Council Elections. He said it was vital that MDP contested the elections, noting that in politics, face value must be taken into account.
