Umar heads to UK for elections discussion
Expected to meet former VP Dr. Jameel

Former Home Minister Umar Naseer announced that he will head to the United Kingdom to hold discussions with former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed regarding the upcoming Presidential Elections.

In a tweet posted the ex-Minister said he will go to London next week and will hold discussions with Dr. Jameel, the leader of the Maldives United Opposition. He had not divulged additional details of the discussions, mainly stating that he will discuss the upcoming Presidential Elections.

Umar, who had served as Home Minister during the time when opposition figures were arrested, had announced his intention to run for President, following his resignation from Home Ministry. After that he began strongly criticizing the Government. Umar had also said he will run for Presidency on PPM ticket.

During his tenure as Home Minister, Police crackdowns on free speech and public protests had reached to unprecedented levels. While as Home Minister, Umar had supported Nasheed’s arrest, but upon resignation his tone had changed and raised questions on Nasheed’s trial.
