A container ship has left Maldives without unloading all its cargo, after its crane broke.

Ship “Miami Trader”, which docked in Male’ on December 21, had sustained damage after a container struck its crane, causing unloading operations to stop the next day.

An official of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) said the ship, which has a 25,000-ton capacity, had unloaded only half of its cargo.

The ship had goods belonging to prominent Maldives companies, some of which are expected to receive a significant loss from its departure.

An official of one the companies has citing the ship’s agent as saying that it had left for Sri Lanka to fix damages.
