Addu Meedhoo Constituency MP Rozaina Adam has stated that justice is the main goal of the joint opposition, stating that just because an individual is allied with the opposition, it cannot be seen as a getaway ticket for that individual.
She made the statement speaking in RaajjeTV’s Maldives Weekly.
Responding to the question of whether the opposition will launch inquiries on issues that had occurred during Umar’s tenure as Home Minister, Rozaina said that the joint opposition had prioritized on establishing justice. As such, she warned that joining the opposition would grant that individual amnesty or the room to act with impunity.
On the question of Umar running on JP’s Presidential ticket, MP Rozaina said as of now, Umar did not have the legal means to run, given the laws of JP, which mandate that tickets are given to the Party Leader. However, in the event, the laws change, and Umar is able to run, MP Rozaina said it would be unlikely for Umar to gain mass support.
Referring to Umar’s political career, the Parliamentarian noted that there was a time when public believed that he was fighting for rights. But, that day, she said, was long in the past. As such, she said that most of the injustices of the past four years had occurred was during Umar’s tenure as Home Minister.
She said that Umar had been silent and complicit in all of these cases, preferring to use his position and follow the diktats issued by President Yameen.
MP Rozaina also denied the rumors that Umar’s entry into the political field, once again, so close to the elections, will have any impact on the joint opposition or the 2018 presidential elections.
