Maldives co-sponsors UN Jerusalem motion, in spite of US warning
Maldives will always advocate for East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine
Any change to status of Jerusalem is a violation
US warned of slashing funds for nations who vote for the motion

Maldives has co-sponsored the motion filed in United Nations General Assembly, over the United State’s decision to declare Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Dr. Ali Naseer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN, in a tweet posted stated that ‘Maldives co-sponsored Resolution declaring null & void any action to alter status of the Holy City’.

The decision of the Government came at a time when US President Donald Trump warned that US will slash funding to any nation that supports the bill.

The motion was led by Turkey. The draft resolution says Jerusalem “is a final status issue” and reaffirms 10 Security Council resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city’s final status must be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The Palestinians pursued the General Assembly vote after the United States on Monday vetoed a resolution supported by the 14 other U.N. Security Council members that would have required Trump to reverse his declaration on Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and not move the US Embassy.
