Maldives Media Council (MMC) says the Council will review content published by media that can negatively impact foreign relations and national security.
A statement released by MMC said that they had received complaints that some articles published by some online media had negative impact on bilateral relations. As such, MMC said they will be reviewing the said content as per law.
Content of this nature, MMC said, only served to impact long standing bilateral relations and create an environment of negativity.
MMC noted that content to this nature was a violation of the Defamation Act. It added that it was the responsibility of the Council to educate and raise awareness on what constitutes as defamation under the law, therefore MMC had appealed to be mindful of this.
MMC statement concluded by issuing a plea to all media to refrain from any activity that negatively impacted on media freedom, national security and relations with other nations.
