Islam is not restricted to just prayer, fasting: Dr. Majeed
If justice is not established then that must be discussed
Scholars afraid to speak out against injustices
Friday sermons follows government’s orders

Former Minister for Islamic Affairs Dr. Abdul Majid Abdul Baaree says that Islam is not just restricted to prayer and fasting, adding that establishing justice was a key tenet as well.

Speaking in the panel held by the Joint Opposition in Maafannu Kunooz, Dr. Majid said that justice must be established in the society. In the event it is not and corruption and theft become rampant, he noted, then it must be discussed.

However, Dr. Majid said scholars were now hesitant to talk about corruption. He also cited the case of Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdullah, who is currently in jail on terror charges. He added that reform of the judiciary was next to impossible, given that those who highlight the issues were penalized using the be all and end all terms of ‘defamation’ and ‘sanctity of court’. Dr. Majid further expressed concern over the loss of Parliamentary seats for MPs. Any meaningful change, he added, can only be driven by the Parliament, headed by a Speaker that had support.

He noted that the Government had monopolized, used and abused religion for their own means. This, he said created more issues, which was seen globally as well.
