Police have begun investigating the sudden death of Ibrahim Nahid in December 8.

Nahid of F Bilehdhoo was taken to the local health centre due to chest pains during a swimming event from Bilehdhoo to Magoodhoo for a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally.

He was pronounced dead not too long after being taken to the local health center.

RaajjeMV understands that police had taken statements from island residents a few days after his death, including participants of the swimming event.

Some of those interviewed told RaajjeMV that police asked them about who planned the event, and whether Nahid had been using medication for illnesses.

Police also questioned the island council president, and a nurse at the Bilehdhoo health centre.

Bilehdhoo Council President Ihsan said he told police that he was not aware of who planned the event, but that they refused to believe him and questioned further.

A group of youths from Bilehdhoo had participated in the event, where swimmers attempted the three-mile long swim, in order to get to the opposition rally in Magoodhoo. Two boats, a speed launch and a dinghy were active in monitoring the swimmers’ condition.

Nahid, an experienced diver, was pronounced dead not too long after being taken to the Bilehdhoo Health Center due to chest pains.
