Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has notified Hoarafushi Council that the island will not be receiving financial compensation for damages incurred from Cyclone Ockhi.
The centre said that, according to the council’s report, Hoarafushi did not receive any damage that affected the livelihood of island residents or left them without a home.
The damage incurred on Hoarafushi does not meet the standards implemented by the government to give compensation after disasters, said the centre.
Noting that the report indicates that walls that had collapsed had been put up without cement, NDMC advised island residents to work to protect their property and household.
The council’s report states that the cost of damage due to Ockhi is MVR 129,815.
Hoarafushi was the most affected out of all the islands.
