Local Government Authority (LGA) has suspended three members of Gaaf Alif Atoll Council.

The Councilors were suspended following the controversial ruling issued by the LGA, which stated that councilors require a special permission from the home ministry, to meet members or diplomats of foreign nations and organizations.

Their suspension came after they met Indian Ambassador to the Maldives Akhilesh Mishra.

The letter sent by LGA to Council said that there was sufficient evidence to prove that the Councilors had violated the missive issued by LGA. Therefore, LGA said the Councilors were in contempt of LGA principles.

As such, due to their actions, the Councilors were suspended from December 13, 2017 the Councilors were suspended for a period of three months. Under the suspension, the Councilors are barred from entering the Council premises unless on personal business. Additionally, the Councilors are barred from using Council premises or Council assets or conduct transactions under the name of the Council or represent the Council in any manner.

Council President Ahmed Fuwad reported to RaajjeMV that their meeting with the Ambassador came before the circular was issued by the Council.
