The family of jailed Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has requested that he be transferred to house arrest citing his medical condition.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa said his doctor has advised him to be in a dust-free environment and avoid strenuous activity due to his ‘critical’ eye condition.

Nashwa said they have requested authorities to transfer him to house arrest where his environment can be controlled as per the doctor’s instructions.

The former vice president of the current administration is serving prison sentences totaling 33 years on charges terrorism and corruption charges.

His family has said he is suffering from glaucoma, kidney stones and has developed an internal cyst as well.

According to his legal team, doctors who saw him advised him to seek treatment abroad due to unavailability of treatment in the Maldives.

Despite his ill health, government is refusing to send him abroad saying that he will flee the country and refuse to return the money he embezzled.
