The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and its leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed have expressed grief at the untimely passing away of Ibrahim Nahid.
Nahid, one of the participants of the swim from Bilehdhoo to Magoodhoo island of Faafu atoll, had to be taken to the health center shortly after the event began. A group of youth from Bilehdhoo island participated in the event, where swimmers attempted the three-mile long swim, in order to get to an opposition rally in Magoodhoo island. Two boats, a speed launch and a dinghy were active in monitoring the condition of the swimmers.
Nahid, an experienced diver, was pronounced dead not too long after being taken to the Bilehdhoo Health Center.
In a statement released on Saturday, MDP said that Nahid was a 'strong' individual, who had always worked 'tirelessly', for the betterment of the people and the country.
Following the news of Nihad's passing, MDP's leader former President Nasheed tweeted his condolences.
Noting that Nihad was always seen on the frontlines in the opposition's work, Nasheed added that he had remained steadfast in the work 'till his last breath'.
