Former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The former President met Prime Minister Ranil on Wednesday and held discussions on the importance of free, fair and inclusive elections for the Maldives in 2018.

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and PM Ranil’s United National Party (UNP) had maintained close ties over the years. President Nasheed was one of the first who had congratulated Ranil after he was reelected to his Prime Ministerial position in 2015.
President Nasheed had made several trips to Sri Lanka over the past years, after he was granted amnesty by the UK. Sri Lanka has once again, like in the past, become a hub for opposition activities. This had caused the Government to accuse the Sri Lankan government of aiding and abetting a coup to overthrow the legally elected Government; an allegation both the opposition and the Sri Lankan authorities have denied.
