High Court nullifies verdict after Council Member loses candidacy, serves sentence
Vilufushi Court verdict nullified candidacy
Finished serving sentence
Had to resign from responsibilities as Council President

High Court has nullified verdict on former President of Vilufushi Island Council Hussain Jabeen after he lost his candidacy and months after serving his sentence.

Vilufushi Court had sentenced Jabeen on April 20, 2015 for disobeying orders, after he had removed a spike on the road that was being reconstructed by Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC). The court had ruled in favor of the prosecution based on the evidence submitted against Jabeen.

Verdict was overturned after High Court had ruled in Jabeen’s favor, in the appeal stage.

At the time of sentencing Jabeen was serving as President of the Council and running for the Council for an extra term. He was contesting on the ticket of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Following the verdict, he lost his candidacy. Elections Commission (EC) had filed case in Supreme Court to nullify candidacy. Supreme Court had ruled for EC.

Jabeen had to serve a six-month sentence under house arrest, which he had completed.
