The High Court has ordered the Civil Service Commission to compensate an employee for sums deduced from his monthly wages on the grounds of absenteeism.
Mohamed Nafeez, a senior project officer at the Fisheries Ministry, claimed that the office deducted allowances and wages for days he was absent, despite him having legitimately been ill.
Nafeez, who has worked at the ministry since 2006, filed the case at the Employment Tribunal in 2015 and adjudicators there had ruled in his favour.
The commission had then appealed the verdict with the High Court, which upheld the tribunal’s ruling that the deductions were made in violation of procedure.
