Most of opposition living abroad

Former Attorney General and prominent lawyer Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed says she is living abroad due to continued injustices for which incumbent President Abdullah Yamen Abdul Gayoom is responsible.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, penned in Dhivehi, Dhiyana drew parallels between the situation of many members of the opposition and that of the circumstances that prompted Prophet Mohamed to leave his home. If injustices increased in their own homes, she said individuals had no other option but to leave their homes. As such, she said this was the reason most of the opposition were living in self-imposed exile.

Her tweet came in response to the statements made by President Abdullah Yameen on Saturday evening, when he launched the Hiyaa housing scheme.

In his address, the President said he was well aware that he will not be President forever. In spite of this, he assured he will not be the kind of person who will choose self-exile over a change in ideology.

Dhiyana’s husband, Abdullah Jabir is also in exile with the Government cancelling his passport.
