Kulhudhuffushi South constituency MP Mohamed Nasheed has said that the island needs just 180 more registered citizens, to reach the required amount to be declared a city.

He said this while speaking at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s anniversary gathering held in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi on Sunday night, emphasizing that all required procedures "will be completed then".

"We will then be able to file request to be declared a city," said MP Nasheed.

Noting that this is the Kulhudhuffushi people's dream, he said that he does not expect that they will have to wait much longer for it.

MP Nasheed also highlighted the various development projects being conducted in Kulhudhuffushi, by the current administration.

President Abdulla Yameen also attended the gathering. Earlier on Sunday, he inaugurated the airport project there, which face immense criticism after the government revealed plans to reclaim the island's mangrove area for the project.
