Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is to file the case of Abdul Rasheed to the Parliament Committee on Government Oversight for further investigation.
Committee Chair Dr. Ibrahim Didi made the announcement in a press conference on Sunday, where he noted that Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) was legally obliged to provide all medical treatment for inmates.
Dr. Didi noted that Abdul Rasheed, who was jailed following the May Day protests of 2015, had passed away due to negligence on part of state authorities.
Former Ihavandhoo Constituency MP Ahmed Abdulah said independent institutions and commissions had failed in their mandate. He stressed that an independent and open probe must be launched into these cases.
Member Zifleen Hassan said that around 2,000 individuals are in jail and the lack of medical treatment in jails was a concerning issue. He also said an adequate health post must be created in jail.
Abdul Rasheed had passed away while receiving treatment in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
