Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says that he believes that his son and jailed Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon will be freed before the Presidential elections in 2018.

Speaking exclusively to RaajjeTV prior to his departure to Malaysia on Saturday night, the former President once again vouched for his son’s innocence, adding that he hoped justice will be found through the legal system.

Stating that he still had hope, President Maumoon said that there was no tangible evidence made against MP Faris. He added that he had high hopes that MP Faris will be freed through the legal system.

The former President is to return from Malaysia in a weeks’ time.

MP Faris had been detained since July 18th on charges of attempted bribery of his fellow Parliamentarians. He is under trial from the bribery charges as well as charges of identity theft.
