Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) is in charge of administering the required medical treatment for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Speaking to RaajjeMV Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said Police was only in charge of security services for the former VP and MCS was in charge of his medicals.

A statement released by Adeeb’s family on Sunday revealed that the family had declined to sign waivers permitting officials to administer an injection to Adeeb. The family said they had declined to sign the waiver as they had fears that an assassination attempt on Adeeb was to be carried out. They further added that the injection was being administered under dubious circumstances.

The statement noted that as the family had refused to sign the waiver, all medical treatment being provided to Adeeb had been halted indefinitely.

Even though MPS had made this statement, MCS had denied they were in charge of medical treatment for Adeeb.

MCS media official refuted these claims, adding that Adeeb was under Police custody, not MCS. Therefore, granting medical treatment to an individual not under their case was an impossible feat, he said.

While there are conflicting statements given by the two agencies, Adeeb’s lawyer Moosa Siraj denied MCS narrative. The denial, he said, was an attempt to halt medical treatment given.

Siraj added that all those who had abetted MCS in this will be held accountable.

Lawyers and family of the former Vice President had warned that Adeeb’s life was in imminent danger due to his various medical ailments. The case has been filed in Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) as well.
