Environment Protection Agency (EPA) says the agency was now investigating the oil spill in Mulee Island in Meemu Atoll.
The oil spill was caused by a dredger, which sank in the island’s lagoon.
EPA Director General Ibrahim Naeem said the agency was closely following the case. He added that Evotion Construction company had already begun cleaning the area. Naeem noted they had received assistance from Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the Island Council in investigating the case.
A team from the agency is to be dispatched to the island.
Speaking to RaajjeMV Mulee Island Council President Ibrahim Zakee said they had received several complaints from boat owners and citizens.
The said dredger sank on September 22nd. The dredger is reportedly brought from China.
The island’s reclamation project began in December 2014. Though the project was to be completed in seven months, the project had languished.
