The visit to several foreign missions in Geneva, Switzerland by ruling party Parliamentarians is a chance for them to learn about good governance, democracy and human rights, Spokesperson for opposition MDP has said.
Speaking with Raajje.mv, MP Imthiyaz Fahmy of MDP said that MDP welcomes such initiatives by the ruling party and encouraged them to learn from the experience. He said that the trip will be an eye-opener for the MPs as European countries uphold democracy and respects and promotes human rights.
“The 2 countries that the government maintains a cozy relationship are known for human rights violations, suppressing democracy and for being dictatorships. So this trip will be a good experience for them to learn about human rights and democracy,” said MP Imthiyaz.
MP Imthiyaz also said that he hopes the ruling party will give up their version of governance and adopt good governance skills in light of this trip.
Several MPs of the Progressive Party of Maldives, including the Majority Leader of the People’s Majlis, visited several foreign missions and offices of several international organizations. However, instead of talking about the nature of the meetings and what was discussed at these meetings, several MPs attempted to use the opportunity to give the impression that the ruling party has a closer relationship with the international community than the opposition.
