Govt. launches national policy on senior citizens
Agreement signed with Pension office

The Government of Maldives has launched the national plan on senior citizens.

The plan was launched by Vice President Abdullah Jihad in the ceremony held to mark the International Day of Older Persons, organised by the Ministry of Gender and Family, held at the Maldives Islamic University.

The Vice President, speaking during the event, stated that the policy was an administration initiative to protect and promote the rights of the Elderly, highlighting the need for continued support from Government institutions in the policy's implementation.

In his speech, the Vice President thanked President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for his efforts and contributions to the policy.

Speaking further, Vice President Abdulla Jihad said that, while the youth were the nation’s greatest asset, the nation’s elderly persons should always be treasured as their experience, and expertise, formed an important contribution to societal development.

The plan focuses on social, economic and health challenges and on providing senior citizens a dignified and protected livelihood, post retirement.

Additionally, Gender Ministry and Pension Office had signed a one year agreement on provision of security and safety to such citizens.

Deputy Minister at Health Ministry Leesha Mohamed and Director Corporate Affairs Sujatha Haleem signed the agreement on behalf of their respective agencies.
