Had not requested for Police assistance to bring back Qasim: Corrections

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has stated that they had not requested for assistance from Maldives Police Service (MPS) to bring back Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili Constituency MP Qasim Ibrahim from Singapore.

Speaking to RaajjeMV MCS media official denied reports that they had requested assistance from MPS to bring back MP Qasim.

However, he stated that they will take the measures applicable in the event MP Qasim does not return back to Maldives before the medical leave expires. The official added that requesting for Police assistance in such cases was current procedure.

MP Qasim was first released for a 10-day medical leave, with him leaving on September 6th. A 10-day extension was granted after the first leave had expired. This was extended by five days later on.

MP Qasim’s medical leave expires on Monday, 2nd October.

The Parliamentarian had undergone cardiac surgery on September 20th, with doctors advising him to remain in Singapore for three months.

MP Qasim was sentenced in absentia for three years, two months and 12 days by Criminal Court on bribery charges. He was sentenced while he was seeking treatment, after having collapsed in Court earlier on August 24th.
