President Abdulla Yameen is no longer connected to the ‘hopes of Maldivians’ and has effectively become irrelevant to them, said opposition lawmaker Imthiyaz Fahmy.
MP Imthiyaz, spokesperson and a prominent member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, said this in an interview to RaajjeMV. He added that Yameen’s policies have thus far shown to be contradictory to his campaign pledges.
“Where is 10,000 rufiyaa allowance he promised to fishermen? Where is the 1,000 rufiyaa allowance he promised to farmers? Where is are all the doctors he promised he would make available?” Imthiyaz said.
The parliamentarian further said that the country has backtracked on its democratic gains, which MP Imthiyaz said was attained during the administration headed by opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed.
“He is absolutely whimsical. I am sure a spinning top is easier to predict than the will of his excellency” Imthiyaz said.
Imthiyaz then referred to Elections Commission’s decision to oust several parliamentarians following a Supreme Court decision banning floor-crossing. MP Imthiyaz said that this was a deliberate move to control parliamentarians.
The lawmaker also said that President Yameen has politically isolated himself by 'framing and jailing' anyone who opposes him, including those that helped him win the office.
