Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, who is serving a jail sentence of 12 years, has been transferred to house arrest.
The Maldives Correctional Service made the decision to transfer the opposition leader to house arrest indefinitely following the birth of his son on Thursday night.
However, the service had not stated an official reason for their decision.
Imran had been transferred to house arrest in Ramadan this year as well, which fell in June, but was incarcerated after.
In an interview to RaajjeMV during his transfer to prison again, Imran had claimed that prison officers have been mistreating inmates.
His lawyers have put forth complaints that Imran himself is being mistreats, with him being brought in to meetings with lawyers in handcuffs.
Imran was charged with inciting violence against the government for a speech he gave during an opposition rally and was sentenced in 2015.
