Opposition Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and Maamigilli constituency has undergone a successful cardiac surgery, the party has said.
The surgery was performed at around 11 am (Singapore time) on Wednesday, at the Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital in Singapore.
The business tycoon was sentenced to three years, two months and 12 days in prison on bribery charges on August 24, over comments he had made while speaking at an opposition rally. He was sentenced in absentia, as he was admitted at hospital at the time of sentencing, having collapsed in Court earlier that day.
He traveled to Singapore on September 6, not long after the medical board at the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) granted him a 10-day medical leave.
Noting that his doctors in Singapore have advised to keep him there for three months "as he has to be closely monitored till his condition stables," Qasim's family had sought to extend the leave, following which he was granted an additional 10 days.
