RaajjeTV's "Maldives with Rohingya" telethon has been met with overwhelming support for the Rohingya Muslims, who have long been facing persecution in Myanmar.
In a tweet posted at around 12:10 am on Sunday, RaajjeTV revealed that it has "achieved MVR 1 million for Rohingya Muslims".
The station's Chief Operating Officer Hussain Fiyaz Moosa thanked the people for the enormous support, adding that this has been "a huge success for RaajjeTV," having reached their target of MVR 1 million.
He added that the fact that they were able to raise MVR 1 million within 10 hours "shows the compassion and generosity of the Maldivian people, towards our Muslim brothers and sisters in dire need".
"Some individuals have donated over MVR 100,000. Children have come and donated the money they had saved for their birthdays. Maldivians are really an example, we would like to give a huge thank you to all those that helped make this a success, as well as the people who donated to the fund," said Fiyaz.
He also thanked the various councils, who have been working with RaajjeTV and holding events across the country, in order to help the Rohingya Muslims.
The telethon, scheduled for 2:30 pm started at 2:42 pm on Sunday- there was slight delay due to power failure at RaajjeTV office- and will conclude at 2:42 pm on Monday.
The station's staff members made contributions after a small ceremony in front of the main office.
Even though the telethon was initiated by RaajjeTV, the donations will be handed to the Rohingya Muslims, on behalf of the people of the Maldives.
