Major General Ahmed Shiyam, the chief of Maldives’ national security, has on Sunday left to Japan.
The Maldives National Defence Force’s information officer said that Major General Shiyam will be participating in the ‘Japan Coastguard Global Summit’.
He is to stay in Tokyo from the 11th to the 14th of this month for the summit, which is a forum of senior maritime safety officials.
The forum will hear a keynote address on roles for coast guard units of participating countries to further act as the legal enforcement agencies for sustainable maritime management.
The summit will also have sessions on Maritime Safety and Marine Environmental Protection, dealing with international ocean pollution, and one to discuss international cooperation in addressing maritime crime.
A total of 40 countries, territories, and institutions expected to participate.
