The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has taken two Sri Lankan fishing vessels into custody for operating illegally within the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

MNDF revealed that the vessels were intercepted during routine Coast Guard patrols on the night of 5 November 2025. At the time of interception, the vessels were reportedly operating approximately 137 nautical miles east of V. Foththeyo Muli.

The Coast Guard has since brought the vessels under its custody and efforts were carried out to escort them to the capital Malé City for further investigation.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in safeguarding Maldivian waters against illegal fishing activities and underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and enforcement of the EEZ.
